cannot create temp file

Hi,
I'm using partimage from systemrescuecd to create an image of a ntfs partition to another ntfs partition, but I receive the error "cannot create temp file" becouse it doesn't find enough disk space".

I'm sure the destination partition is biggest then the source partition.

I have installed the operating system right now, so, I think, the system is "clear" and not "defragmentated".

I found others posts about this but no solutions, someone could help me?

1. have not created: "mkdir" or
2. you have not mounted the file system/path to storage

The message you are receiving has nothing to do with enough space. Read the documentation again on the two issues I have listed above.

If you can not get it after this, post again and I will give you an example.

Obnascar must have gotten it, but I've the same problem.
I want to create the image as /dev/hda4/w98.partimg.gz -
could you please show steps?

First of all, I hope you have a storage partition on your computer. You can not store image files on the same partition as the partition you are trying to make an image of. That is because the partition you are trying to make an image of has to be unmounted, while your storage partition has to be mounted.

If you do not have a storage partition, then you are going to have to either make one, if your Hard drive is large enough, or you will not be able to accomplish this task, let us know please.............

Yes, the partition is on a separate drive.
'hda1' is the partition I intend to image, and it is not mounted.
The storage partition is 'hdb4', and it has a working suse system on it. Is that a problem, other than the risk of overwriting susefiles?
I didn't think i could use another ptn on the drive i'm imaging.
I don't have any empty ptns to use as storage. I'm trying to move files from the smaller oftwo drives preparatory to replacing the smaller with a much larger drive, onto which I will then reinstall the system images.
I've already created a directory on hda4 ['imgfile'] and made it writable by everyone, trying to overcome the error msg.

Do I need to make another directory for the 'temp' file? [using the mkdir process]
Should I perhaps try using an external usbdrive as the storage?
Does the storage partition need to be formatted same as the imaged partiion?

The command line help examples say nothing of this process, by the way, and everytime I've tried to invoke it as specified, it kicks out to the graphic mode and wants me to retype everything I've already entered following those examples... resulting in the same error... flustrating, to say the least.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, the following should work for you then.

When booting your SystemRescue Live CD, at the prompt enter:

Code: Select all

mkdir /mnt/hdb4

mount /dev/hdb4 /mnt/hdb4

Then just to make sure your partition that you are making an image of is not mounted:

Code: Select all

umount /dev/hda4

Then open partimage:

Code: Select all

partimage

Where it ask you to enter the path to storage and the name of your file, it would be:

/mnt/hdb4/name_of_image file

I hope this solves your problem....have fun !
