Error when attempting to make an image of an XFS file system

Postby Hayl » Mon May 03, 2004 4:05 pm

The Partimage web site says that XFS support is "stable" but when I run Partimage off of the SysRecCD, it warns me that the XFS support is "beta".

When I attempt to make an image of an XFS partition, I receive the following error:

"Can't read bitmap block 0 from image"

(PS: Is there a new version coming out any time soon?)

Not Encouraging

Postby jlowell » Mon Sep 06, 2004 1:15 am

Hayl,

I'm encountering the very same problem with an xfs partition and you're right, the site makes the claim that xfs support is "stable". I too got a very clear warning just before attempting to copy to the image file that the xfs support was beta. Given the result I got, I'd have to say the performance was indeed beta.

I'm hardly encouraged by the misleading statement, it and another touting this package as Linux's answer to GHOST. Partimage operates in a very different fashion than GHOST does and I think that claim is at best misleading. And that you haven't had an answer in several months doesn't help. This thing really needs tightening up.

DW,

Your sarcasm is intended to divert attention from the fact that misleading statements have been made at the site about xfs support? That's sufficiently schlock. From appearances, you must be the house apologist. I'll bet that keeps you working overtime, eh?

Some advice for the future: If your going to identify yourself emotionally with something, make sure its not going to embarrass you all the time. And as to refunds, I only require them of people that can be reached.

DW,

Debian, schmebian. The man page that makes the statement you cite is dated June 24, 2001!!

Just to keep you current, here's the relevant material from the Partimage home page:

Supported file systems
name description state
ext2fs/ext3fs the linux standard stable
ReiserFS a new journalized and powerful file system stable
FAT16/32 DOS and Windows file systems stable
HPFS IBM OS/2 File System stable
JFS Journalised File System, from IBM, used on Aix stable
XFS another jounalized and efficient File System, from sgi, used on Irix stable
UFS Unix File System beta
HFS MaxOS File System beta
NTFS Windows NT, 2000 and XP experimental

A suggestion for you: Next time you feel an impulse to be sarcastic toward or critical of someone bringing a legitimate complaint to this forum, stop, get the facts, and repeat to yourself slowly "Just for today, I refuse to be a schlemeil". Maybe it'll help.

I had similar problems with XFS and partimage.

I tried the LRS (linbox rescue server gpl edition) and It worked perfectly :-)
