Hi,

When attempting to backup an ext3 partition I receive the following error message.

"Can't read bitmap block 0 from image"

Does anyone know why?

Cheers,
Tom

Send your logfile in partimage-users ML.

Thanks for that - I wasn't even aware there was a log file!

Just thought I should check one thing, you should be able to create an image of a mounted ext3 partition shouldn't you? It always worked with reiser...

I get the exact same error. I am using partimage stable trying to ghost an ext3 partition with my gentoo installation (the 1st one worth saving :D).

I get the same error either if i run partimage from within gentoo (thus on the same partition mounted as / )... but then i also tried with knoppix without mounting the partition in question.

If i get it to check the partition before starting, it comes saying efs2check (or something like that) has found errors, but offers me to continue. If I continue however, it comes immediately back with the error

"Can't read bitmap block 0 from image"

This is the log from when i do it from within the same partition (I forgot to save the knoppix one, but i doubt it is different)

Now i wonder: is there a point trying with partimage devel instead? Am i correct in assuming that it will not work if I try to ghost a partition which is mounted as / and from where partimage is launched?

Thanks

According to the homepage http://www.partimage.org/ partimage runs under the 2.2.x & 2.4.x kernels.
No mention of 2.6.x.

I'm trying to back up an ext3fs partition from Linux Mandrake 10.1 and I get exactly this error, and e2fsck says the partition is clean.

Besides I used to be able to backup ext3 partitions of Mandrake 10.0 with Powerquest Drive Image 7, and now on Mandrake 10.1 this doesn't work anymore either (new version of ext3fs may be ???)

I forgot to mention that I am using the original rescue CD so normally it's not a kernel problem.

Oups... I'm sorry in fact it works fine.

I was doing the e2fsck -f on the wrong partition that's why partimage kept saying that e2fsck found errors even though I could not find any.

Sorry for disturbing and thanks to the coder(s) for this awesome soft.

Hi,

I'm using partimage 0.6.4 from insert or Knoppix - I've tried both with the same error. The filesystem is ext3. Partition is not mounted and I've forced an e2fsck to check an fix any errors on correct partition. When I boot off of the partition, it runs fine. I'm trying to save the partion image to a seperate mounted partition on the same ide drive.

Each time, I get the same error when trying to create the image. The error is: "Can't read bitmap block 0 from image"

This seems to happen to others, but I haven't seen anyone suggest an actual solution. Anyone?

Cheers.

grr, have exact same problem, trying to image ext3 file systems.

using cmd
Code:

partimagessl --debug=10 --compress=1 --server=*** save /dev/hda1 spcp.slak101.partimg.gz

The error message is 'Can't read bitmap block 0 from image'

partimage[d] 0.6.4
running as root
e2fsck states fs are clean
dd if=/dev/hdaX of=/tmp/test.bin count=10 works
partitions are not mounted
2.4.27 kernel

key line from logs below seems to be
Code:

[Main] fs_base.cpp->checkBitmapInfos#829: ERROR BITMAP Used and m_bCanBeMore=0
[Main] fs_base.cpp->checkBitmapInfos#830: THROW: -95

client log
server log

I hope it helps.
regards,
Troc STer.

Maybe this could help: http://lrs.linbox.org
I never had a single problem backuping ext2/3 reiser or xfs partitions with it !
Just try their demo CD to know (be warned, the demo cd will erase your HD).

When running in GUI mode got the "Can't read bitmap block 0 from image" error. This is in SAVE mode.
When running in batch mode the command returns immediately with an output file of 850 bytes +- 50 bytes. No error messages.
I'm running it as:
partimage --nocheck -B=foo --batch --allowmnt --overwrite --nodesc --compress=1 save /dev/sda1 /tmp/partimage.sda1.img

The solution is: although we run this with the --nocheck option, and from the GUI I uncheck the "check" option, it still runs a check.

If e2fsck reports a problem it will fail saving with the error message in the GUI or nothing in batch mode.

So, run e2fsck on the partition that fails.

This really sucks for batch mode, as I'm running these saves on all my servers over the weekend.
I'll have to add a check for output files that are smaller than 1KB.

Thanks for a great product, and I hope this solution will help someone.
