NTFS partition size

Hi all,

I'm trying to copy an image from a 400GB HDD to a 250GB HDD (usage is about 15 GB)
This used to work fine with norton ghost but ghost crashes everytime on new MB.

I can make the partitition 400GB and this works fine and the OS on the image (Windows XP) works fine but, of course, sees a 400GB HDD while it's only 250GB.

So my question is:
Is there a way to copy the image to a smaller disk/partitition than the source image?

I'm trying to do the same thing, namely restore the occupied blocks of an image created by partimage to a smaller partition. Don't have an answer yet, but here is what I've discovered:

1. Partimage will only copy the occupied blocks in the image file.
2. It is possible to create a loop device to restore the partition to
3. In the restore process, it looks for a partition the same size as the
original.
4. What I'm trying to do is to manually edit the partition table on the uncompressed image to the size of the target partition. Haven't done that
yet.

5. Or - non-destructively shrink the original partition size before applying partimage.

My problem is somewhat difficult since I'm trying to restore the files from
a corrupted file system.

Just some thoughts, not answers.
